The words of Othin

  • First Niundr

- When you come to a door, you should look around, take a careful eye of the room. Be mindful of who might not have your best interest.

- Be a good host. Find a seat for guests who enter your halls; do not let them grow impatient at the threshold.

- They need the warmth of a fire, the coldness will have chilled their bones. Get them food and dry clothes, treat them well from their hard journey. (all of life is a hard journey)

- They need water when they arrive. Bring them warm clothes or blankets and a warmer welcome. If possible give them a chance to be heard.

- Those who wander the world must carry wisdom as their first tool; life is easy where you are from. Live a life where you may sit among the wise and have something worthy to be heard.

- Those who are wise do not flaunt their wisdom; they guard it carefully. The wise are silent when they first come to a stranger’s home, and those who are watchful are often safe from harm. Let strangers add to your wisdom, there will be no more faithful friend than a good supply of wisdom.

- When you arrive for a meal, keep your mouth shut; listen with your ears and watch with your eyes. This is how the wise find their way.

- You will only truly be happy when you can find praise and friendship within yourself. You can never be certain how someone else holds you in their heart. Don’t put too much stock in the opinions of others.

- You will be happiest if you can find praise and wisdom within yourself. Count the advice of others, but none too much. Bad advice has often come from trusting the words from another’s lips.

  • Second Niundr

- There is no better baggage in this life than knowledge and wisdom. It will purchase more for you than any treasure.

- There is no better baggage in this life than knowledge and wisdom. And there is no worse burden than too much vice.

- Drugs and alcohol do not have as much benefit to the soul as some claim. You will know less the more you take, the wisdom and knowledge will drain out of you.

- Drugs and alcohol are a memory stealing heron who feeds from your thoughts as you imbibe. Even I was trapped by that bird when I drank in the home of Gunnloth.

- I was down in the bottle, too lost in it, at the home of Fjalar. You will find that the best gatherings are the ones where you depart with your senses.

- It is noble to be quiet, thoughtful, and brave. Do not forget to be joyous and happy, there is time enough for silence in time after.

- The fool lives as though their life can be extended, avoiding unnecessary risk. They will find no peace in their old age, even if they are healthy.

- The fool glares when they come to a gathering, talking to themselves, or pouting - waiting for a drink to loosen their mood and their tongue.

- Only someone who has visited many places can know something about how others think. This is the path to wisdom. Be mindful not to travel the world and only visit your home in other scenery. Know people and know the world.

  • Third Niundr

- Do not grip the bottle too tightly, but drink a good amount for yourself. Say something that is meaningful or be silent. Do not be afraid to leave early if either evades you.

- Do not eat more than your share, it will destroy you. You will be judged by others on account of your appetites.

- Animals know naturally when they should leave their grasses, but an unwise person does not know the measure of their appetites.

- It is only the stupid who make cruel jokes at everyone. They have so much to fear inside themselves and learning that will do them good.

- It is foolish to lay awake at night worrying about everything, it will fatigue you. When the sun rises, your problems will still be there but you will be more exhausted by them.

- Do not think that everyone who laughs with you is your friend. You cannot know if they value your wit or are entertained by you, look to other measures.

- Do not think that everyone who laughs with you is your companion. When troubles comes to you, many who have laughed with you and drank with you will find their own safety. Find other ways to measure friendship.

- Only the ignorant think they know everything by defining the limits of what should be known. They will only ever have small answers, even when they sound big.

- It’s best for you to keep your mouth shut if you’re unsure. No one will know your ignorance if you keep it to yourself, but the ignorant will never know how foolish they look when they keep talking.

  • Fourth Niundr

- You will be seen as wise if you know the answer to something and can explain it. This reputation will carry you better than any boat.

- You can say plenty of nothing if you talk too much. A fast tongue will make trouble for it’s owner unless it’s disciplined.

- It is best to eat meals early, unless you are a guest. If you are hungry, you will be without energy and your mind will be slow.

- Choose your road to friendship wisely. Getting together with a bad friend will always feel like a difficult labor. The road to visit a good friend will always feel easy and worth the effort.

- You should keep moving when you are travelling, never be a guest for too long. Hospitality has limits which you should hope to never find.

- It is good to have a place to call home, even if it is very little. Even if it is just a bed and a leaky roof, this will do more for you than having nowhere.

  • Fifth Niundr

- It is good to have a place to call home, even if it is very little. Your soul will bleed if you have to live very long under another’s roof.

- Never go anywhere without being prepared for the world. You do not know what day you will receive and it is better to be ready for danger than not.

- Be generous to your friends. Give them what you can, whenever you can. But do not give to those who will not reciprocate. Mutual giving is the key to a lifelong friendship.

- Be a good friend to your friends. Repay their kindnesses with your kindness, their joy with your joy, but also their treachery with your own.

- Be a great friend to your friends and be a good friend to their friends, but never give friendship to the enemy of your friend.

- If you have a good friend, and really trust them, and want good things from this friendship; you should speak your mind with them, exchange gifts, and visit them often.

- If you have a friend you don’t trust, but need that friendship for other reasons, speak kindly to them, flatter them, but repay any treachery with your own.

- Do not think that big gifts are the only path to friendship. A simple meal has made more friends than a polished gemstone.

- Coasts that have short beaches are not washed well by the sea. This is true of minds that have narrow views. Not everyone is equally gifted, but most are able.

- Wisdom will bring great things, but it may also thin your joy. The happiest people are wise without being overly so.

  • Seventh Niundr

- Wisdom will bring great things, but it may also thin your joy. Your heart will be heavy if you are too wise.

- Rise early if you do not have help with your tasks and get to work. Sleep will rob you of your wealth if you are not mindful.

- You should know how to keep your house in good order and condition. Maintain your home with some pride.

- Better to have the choice of children than not. Even if it is late, even if it is after you die. The world will move on without you and children are the vehicle to move goodness forward with it.

- The ignorant man does not know how little he knows. Fools become foolish by listening to fools. The fate and wealth of two men are not balanced on a scale, they may not be related at all.

- Animals die, people die, you will die just the same. But a good reputation, that will never die if you have earned it well.

- Plants die, people die, you will die just the same. The only thing that will not die is the memory of your words and deeds.

- Do not covet wealth, it can be lost as quickly as it is earned - life can have no more fickle friend.
