Niflheim
The Realm of Ice
Niflheim was the second realm created by Ymir as he drew together the essence of cold and entropy from the universe.
Niflheim is known as the fields of the forgotten, in the desolate wastes of this realm, matter and energy slowly dissipate into nothingness, returned to their lowest forms. The frozen surface of this world is windswept with the dusts and ices of elements as they degrade their energies and slowly evaporate. The core of this world is an unimaginably cold void that slowly absorbs all that is. The surface is an unbelievably dense and cold structure that provides no comfort and leaches matter and energy from everything that it contacts. The process is not fast, and can take eons to wear away even the thinnest material, but the process is utterly inevitable.
Mulspelheim is ruled by the Giant Vornir; the second child of the brothers Othin, Villi, and Ve. Vornir is the absence of all things. He has no compassion, no anger, no joy, and no pain. He wants for nothing and asks for nothing, he simply exists. His stoic nature cannot be swayed by passion, reason, empathy, or logic. It is his purpose to witness the slow destruction of all things, the heat death of the universe.
Unlike Mulspelheim, it is not uncommon to find beings wandering through the misted wastes of Niflheim. There are few paths that connect Niflheim to most realms, but there are numerous ways for souls to find there way there from Hel. It is not uncommon for restless souls to refuse to be at peace in Hel - they wander the halls and valleys in search of what they are missing. Invariably they find themselves lost amongst the mists of Niflheim.
Also unlike Mulspelheim, Niflheim is often used in the courts of the gods as punishment for those who trespass and offend. While the fires of Surtr might cause torment, the endless isolation of the ice fields are the pathways to absolute madness. Some are banished to walk the fields for days, some for weeks, some for lifetimes. It is rare that such sentences last longer, but not uncommon for those banished here to become endlessly lost.

It is very unlikely. The courts of the gods do banish beings to walk the wastes of Niflheim, but they are usually species other than mankind. Mankind usually comes to Niflheim due to a restlessness after death.
Loki has been known to abandon mortals in Niflheim, but they are usually sought by their patron gods and often rescued.

Only Vornir inhabits the wastes by choice. His power is such that he resists the entropy of this realm.
All other beings here are lost for eternity, wandering endlessly as they slowly succumb to degeneration.
